Dear Mr. Larson
While reading your book “Isaac’s Storm”, I was greatly impressed with your detailed account of the devastating hurricane which at the beginning of the last century destroyed Galveston.
On every page I found your descriptions of human suffering and personal accounts of survivors magnificently narrated, and well documented.
That is, until I got to page 266.
In your notes at the end of the book, you write: “I approached the problem the way the paleontologist approaches a collection of bones....”. Yet, on page 266 you wrote: “On January 10, 1901, a crew working for an Italian immigrant named Antonio Francisco Lucich, self named Tony Lucas, ran for their lives as thunder roared from their drill tower....”.
This statement is completely false, and it casts a shadow on your claims of your painstaking research and diligent quest for the truth in compiling the information for your book. If you had taken just a few moments to browse the internet, you would have found the following information which would prove to you that Anthony Lučić was not Italian any more than you are.
Anthony Francis Lucas (born Antun Lučić; September 9, 1855 – September 2, 1921) was a Croatian-born oil explorer. With Pattillo Higgins he organized the drilling of an oil well near Beaumont, Texas that became known as Spindletop. This led to the widespread exploitation of oil and the start of the petroleum age. Lucas was born into a Croatian family of shipbuilders and owners in the city of Split, Croatia).
It will be fitting, and we believe necessary, at this point to quote the direct words spoken by the late Anthony Francis. He tells how he left the navy, how he came to the United States, and how he came to be known as Lucas instead of Lucic. From an interview with this great man, only a few years before his death, we quote: "I entered the Austrian navy as a midshipman and was promoted to second lieutenant. At that time an unpleasant incident made me very much dissatisfied with the rigor of the service, perhaps because of my Croatian origin, so that I was glad to accept an invitation to pay a visit to an uncle of mine in this country. For that purpose, I obtained a six months' leave of absence and came to the United States. That was in 1879, when I was twenty-four years old. My father's name was Lucic-Luchich. The reason of the change was that when I came to America on a visit to my uncle, my father's brother, as I have stated, I found my uncle had adopted the name of Lucas, owing to the difficulty that Americans had in spelling and pronouncing Luchich. So, for the time, expecting to remain only three or four months, I permitted myself to be addressed as Lucas. When I decided to reside in the United States I retained this modification of the name."
Nikola Tesla, scientist and inventor, born in Croatia 1856, Rudjer Boskovic, philosopher and scientist, born in Dubrovnik, Vladimir Prelog, Nobel prize in chemistry, 1975,
Lavoslav Ruzicka, Nobel prize in chemistry, 1939, Andrija Mohorovicic 1857-1936, seismologist, discovered the 'Moho' discontinuity named after him, Jacob Matijevic, Ph.D - NASA engineer, George M. Skurla, aeronautical engineer for the Apollo program, Director of Operations at the Kennedy Space Center, former president of the Grumman Corporation, and many other inventors, engineers, chemists, mathematicians, and world renowned scientists, were Croatian.
It is unfortunate that with all this readily-available information, it seems that most American politicians and writers, such as yourself, would rather call them Italians, Serbs, Austrians, Hungarians, and even Martians, than Croatians.
Otherwise, the book is extremely well-written, and very informative.
Sincerely yours,

Prievod
Dragi gospodine Larson,
